SWELLING AND THERMAL PROPERTIES OF SHAPE MEMORY NATURAL RUBBER

Abstract


Natural rubber vulcanizate with different blend amount of accelerator was prepared. Fabrication
of shape memory natural rubber by swelling natural rubber vulcanizate with palmitic acid at 75 ⁰C
(100 wt% palmitic acid loading). Shape recovery experiments run by stretching to 100% (1 hour)
at permanent set after heating treatment in a water bath (70°C for 30 s) and then cooling in 10°C
water for 30 s. The purpose of this research was to study the effect of the accelerator on swelling
and thermal properties of shape memory natural rubber. Shape memory vulcanizate swollen
palmitic acid exhibited shape recovery of 3-98,94% and shape fixity 88-96.92%. The thermal
analyzes with TGA/DTA of the shape memory natural rubber vulcanizate indicated percentage
average weight loss at 97.78% for the blank sample and 99.18% for sample vulcanizate swollen
palmitic acid.
